Etretat

And this, right here, is why I wouldn't want to go on a guided tour. Sure, it would be nice to have someone else do all the planning for me, arrange all my meals in advance, and all that. And if I were part of a tour group, and I said, 'you know, these cliffs are pretty cool, I'd like to explore them some more over lunch,' I'm sure that would fine.

However.

If I were to say to a tour guide: 'You know, these cliffs are pretty cool. I think I'd like to spend the night here, then walk 20 km along the cliff edge to the next town, and take the train back from there,' they would respond 'Dammit, Nathan, get back on the bus before you raise my premiums.'

Every additional hassle I face from making all the trip arrangements myself, are 100% worth it to me, to get to see places like this:

The town of Etretat:

And, yes, that is a golf course to the left.

See, in the U.S., this kind of place would have railings. Careful, doggies!

My hotel (dating from the 15th century and restored in the 19th, I believe):

My battery died after taking several hundred cliff pictures, so I wasn't able to get pictures of the brick house teetering at the edge of a cliff, or the adorable little lambs near Fecamp, or the Benedictine Palace/Distillery/Art Museum, so you'll just have to take my word for it: they were all extremely photogenic as well.

Wow!! how did you find that place? It is gorgeous. I am glad that I did not know you standing that close to cliff edges.

The first photo of you (sans veste). And a bird, too. I'm guessing it's too far to swim to England from there :-)

Pray tell, what type of bird IS that?

My that bird looks awfully furry and beakish. Did you rescue it from the cliffs?

Gorgeous photos, Nathan! What an amazing place. Also enjoyed the post on "local art". Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase. What an incredible experience you are enjoying!
