Corte

Today we took a break from our road trip - to take a train trip! This was also a break from our trip up the coast, to head up into the forests and mountains in the interior of the island. The movement of the train, smudged windows, and drizzly weather outside make it hard to capture the beauty of the scenery we were passing through, but this was definitely a great ride!

We had thought of stopping in Vizzavona, site of a well-known waterfall, but the rain and lack of easy way to get to the trailhead dissuaded us. Instead, we went straight on to Corte, the former capital of Corsica, and main base of the rebel Corsicans against their Genoese and French invaders. We wandered around there, up to the fortress, and into the local chocolate shops.

My parents in the castle dungeon:

We also checked out the museum near the castle, which had some unusual exhibits:

(Collection of religious robes).

Eventually we got tired of wandering around in the rain, and decided to find a bar to sit in, where we played cards, drank hot chocolate, and watched the locals. (Until their habit of smoking in the bar chased us back out into the weather). From there, we had another train trip, back to Ajaccio, to restart our trip up the coast!

I’m enjoying your blog. I’d have had trouble with the smoke as well.
